RecoverPoint 4.0 – Unable to join clusters (Gateways and Maintenance Mode)

Hey folks! I have been working with EMC RecoverPoint for a while now, and I really love the product. It is one of those products I get excited about because once it is installed, it just works! For those who aren’t familiar, EMC’s RecoverPoint is a replication appliance (physical or virtual) that can be used to provide point-in-time recovery for …

VPlex Non-Uniform and Uniform Configurations

I had a recent conversation with my friend, Joe (@virtacit), and my ValCo Labs brother, Josh (@joshcoen), about the different access methods for EMC’s VPlex. Now, if you aren’t familiar with VPlex, EMC is doing some amazing things with storage virtualization. VPlex allows you to take one (or many) storage arrays (EMC or otherwise) and present the storage to VPlex, …

VMware Workstation 8 “Micro-Freezes”

I ran into this issue recently, and even though the answer was out there, it took me a while to find the right fix. Here it is again… Symptom I built an admin workstation for work but soon noticed what others were calling “micro-freezes” while using the virtual machine. The virtual machine’s responsiveness was great, however, it would frequently hang …

Pimp my PX4 – LCD Image Hacking

Let’s face it, the LCD images that ship with the PX4 are pretty weak. While they provide some useful information (boot percentage, storage usage, current time ) they just aren’t as cool as custom designs. The following steps can be used to apply your own custom images to your PX4. Required tools: SSH client (Putty) Image editing utility (Irfanview) Custom …

I was recently approached by one of my performance engineers about increasing the historical statistic level for our environment. Adjusting this level increases or decreases the amount of vCenter performance counters that are saved over time for each of the performance intervals. We were asked to increase our level in order to expose additional metrics to their monitoring application. While …

How to enable W2K8 Storage Server iSCSI Target on any version – Windows MSI Hacking for the Win!

A while back, I was engineering different Windows 2008 cluster scenarios for a project. As usual, I took most of this work home to the Uberlab for further testing. Unfortunately, I ran into a snag. I didn’t have any iSCSI devices that could pass the Windows Cluster Validation Test. In short, whenever you build a cluster, MS attempts to validate …

Query/Start vCenter Service – PowerShell Goodness

The following powershell script will allow you to QUERY and START the vCenter service for one or more servers. The script accepts multiple arguments, or an array “vcenter_servers” defined in the script. First, the script attempts to resolve/ping the vCenter server. If successfull, it performs a WMI call to determine the service status. Download here: vcenter_server_status.ps1 Enjoy! Martin
